I was just wondering what to do in terms of a sleeping bag?! I am heading out to camp in the Andes for which I will need a sleeping bag, but at the same time I will be spending a year in Oz where it will be completely useless!
I already have a 2 season bag but when I went camping in Africa with it I froze! Any suggestions? Would a liner make it warm enough for camping?
I'd be inclined not to bother. Rent or buy one when you get to the Andees, which will be (a) cheaper, (b) you would'nt have to lug it around the rest of the time and (c) will be of a standrad/warnmth designed for the Andees and that sort of temperature.
Lines will make it warmer a bit, but not hugely unless you have big thick ones which take room to carry. If it's really cold, Take some long johns/clothes you can layer and wear in bed, wear a hat in bed (most heat is lost through the head) but whatever you don't do, try not to get your head into the sleeping bag - if you do you breath will turn into dropplets and freeze etc, and just make you colder [learn't that the hard way camping in Northern Norway]
Sleeping bag wont be completely useless in australia. In the outback tempratures in the winter can drop to freezing at night. If you plan to stay in oz for a year a sleeping bag will be handy aswell.
I think I will take the bag I have as the camping bit is at the beginning of the trip and then dispose of it if it is becoming a pain. I will definately use the hat / head under the covers tips!
Will probably purchase a cheap but warm blanket if (and when) I find I am not hard enough to cope with the chilly weather!
what about taking one to asia?
