I'm travelling to Oz in three weeks on a WHV!! So excited but also a bit nervous! I've applied for my bank account through NAB and just need to go into a branch when I fly into Sydney with my passport to complete the set up. I've known for months that I'm going but there's only so much you can do/organise before you get there!
I was going to apply for my bank account too through NAB but was a little put off by the fact of how they wanted to know the worth of assets that I was not bringing with me. Had considered Commonwealth originally but changed after recommendations from here. I had originally planned to spend my first day getting everything straight (bank, SIM, ITN) and then started trying to do it before I left and realizing that I can't after all.
I am an Aussie who lives in Sydney so will try and answer some questions for you. Firstly, Melbourne is lovely but if you can, try and spend some time in Sydney to get to know the city - it really is a great place to be..... Coogee beach or even Randwick has quite a few places for backpackers to stay and is a bus trip away from the main city of Sydney but is central to everything. Buses and trains are fairly easy to get around on. As previously posted our public transport is expensive, we have what's called an opal card that you could look into. Wages are fairly comparable to cost of living tho.... Not sure if you drive or have a motor bike licence but when we have travelled along the coast of Victoria (the state Melbourne is in) we saw a traveller with a tent, his motorbike and a backpack - it was all he needed!
I imagine you are feeling a bit nervous, but we have such a large community of tourists from the UK that it wouldn't take you long to meet a few people and build a network here.
Also Telstra has wider coverage (I have vodaphone and it isn't as wide for coverage as my work phone which is Telstra)
All the best - good for you for getting out there and enjoying life!!
