If i'm not wrong australians not need a visa to enter in Chile (but if i'm not wrong is needed a the payment of a fee, please confirm in the chilean representatives in your country). Chile is the one of the most advanced countries in south america, besides Uruguay, and things tend to be more tranquil in the migratory process....

Yeah, I know a visa isn't required, but a reciprocity fee is payable there. I was just thinking maybe that would be better to fly in to with a one way flight and move around from there.

So , if i'm not wrong, as i'm understood, i'm agree with you in you thesis to only land in south america, and once you stay there you choose your destiny on the way...
The probability to to pass through the brazilian imigration control by airports and ports is of a hundred percent. By land, depending of the hour and the point of entrance, in certain points the control don't exist, due to extense border and lack of agents to make the control. I'm speaking with a friend (hes a travel agent) a he confirm, only the visa in passaport will grant you the entrance in Brazil.
Sorry for my misunderstood and have nice travel throught South America! Have many nice places to visit, plan carefully and with calm...
