Hi Rickie - obviously a good, comfortable backpack with a detachable daypack would be useful. Since you are probably flying from the UK, one with a zip-away harness might be best (Macpac do them). It is possible to get 70-80 litre packs but, once full, they are probably too heavy to carry easily. A 55 litre one will be easier but you'll have to be economical with what you carry. Easy-to-dry trousers, shorts and shirts are normally fairly lightweight and not too bulky so just two or three of each should be sufficient.

For other equipment, you'd need to tell everybody the sorts of activities you might be doing. For walking in the outback, some strong leather boots are necessary - snake bites are rare but possible, and a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun off (you can buy these in Aus).

Hi

You can buy anything you need in Aus just like at home, so there's nothing critical to take. I agree with the previous poster about trying to travel light. I travel with a 35 litre backpack.

Start writing yourself a packlist. Something like:
Clothes: 2 shirts, ...etc
Toiletries bag: toothbrush, ...
Lightweight boots
Phone + charger + worldwide adapter
Documents: passport, driving licence,...
Daybag
Sunglasses
Waterproof jacket?
Fleece?

You basically need the same as for a few days away, and then wash things. Don't try to take enough for a year - 365 pairs of socks isn't possible, so having decided you're going to have to do laundry it just becomes a case of travelling light and selecting quick drying practical things.
