Hi,
Quoting kmwain

"Sander... It is exactly that.

I never know when people have responded and then struggle to find the people who are in a similar position to myself to chat to " end quote.

I see that subscription is the default setting for opening a thread but not when posting a response.

I think that making subscriptions the default all the time would be the best remedy for the first part of kmwain's issue. But the E mail issue needs to be fixed. Having an unreliable notification system is like having a stopped watch. Good 2 seconds a day.

I subscribe to Cruise Critics & do not always get notified by them either. It is a real turn-off.

Yeah, my first priority today is getting this notification thing working again. I set up extra logging last week which shows the block is happening prior to reaching the mail server, so now I just need to work out where exactly there's a bug in my code!

Just testing a response here -- notifications should go out to 3 people if it's working right.

Only one sent. I think I found it though - trying again now

Ok yes, that seems to have done it. It was breaking out of a loop right after sending the first email. So only one person would ever be notified. Sorted now. Phew!

Now to catch up on the topic at hand.

Renaming My Topics to My Subscriptions might make sense at one level, but that means for those people who don't want to subscribe by email - it would not show anything at all. Or there would have to be an option to track a thread without subscribing by email. To me, that only further complicates matters.

"Threads I've participated in" would be quite clearly those threads you've posted in, whether subscribed or not. "My Topics" is still ambiguous because that could include threads you've participated in as well as threads you're subscribed to, which don't necessarily need to have subscribed to. So as far as this wording goes, "Threads I've participated in" would definitely be the clearest. But maybe this needs to also be extended to be used in the other link at the top currently "My forum posts" so it's clear they are the same thing.

But the wording is a minor thing. 2 fixes I'll try to get in today.

1. Make subscriptions on by default and remember your last choice
2. Start tracking forum views. It's not going to really be possible to track all forum views, after all you might not be logged in when you view the thread. But I think people can understand that.

....

Renaming My Topics ....

But the wording is a minor thing.

.....

Minor it may be, but it is still fascinating me & it is a wonder to me that this is all discussed on an open Forum.

So - a little more..

If My Forum Posts, My Topics & Threads I've participated in, are indeed the same thing, then to avoid any confusion, they should be called the same thing, or at least start with the same thing.
Perhaps My Topics could read ...
My Forum Posts - Recent Activity.

or

My Forum Posts - Activity Since Last Viewed

But - if My Forum Posts and My Topics are the same - I question the need for the My Topics part at all.
Just improve the content of My Posts & fill the My Topics space with something new, that is not a duplicate of something else.
I hate to say it - but an advert maybe.
Or leave it blank.

After all, My Subscriptions has just as much interest to me as My Posts but it does not get it’s duplicate space.

The My Forum Posts link as it currently stands is one click removed and therefore not nearly as immediate as the My Topics section on the right. The My Topics section on the right can't include nearly as many topics though.

This said, I think the link to the full list of topics should now be moved to be directly under the current My Topics section where it logically fits for people who need to see older threads they've participated in.

.

It's nice to be getting notifications of posts to my subscriptions.

Those two changes are now live.

So if you see a number next to a thread, it means there's been a new post since you last visited. To avoid all threads having numbers next to them, I've ran a query to set that everyone has seen the latest post. So obviously it's only going to be useful for responses posted from here on in.

Subscribing is now ON by default. Your preference is stored in a cookie.

I reworded the My Topics somewhat and moved those two other links to subscriptions into the same area.
