Hi Samsara,

I was in China in December and it was the coldest I've ever been in my life. I do believe it was especially cold that particular Dec. (some kind of record lows, when I was in Louyang it was -19c). The problem wasn't so much the cold but the fact that there was NO HEAT ANYWHERE, once you left your hotel room until you returned to the room, no heat. I remember eating breakfast wearing my ski parker, scraf, etc.. There was no heat in any of the buses, museums, resturants, shops anywhere! I took a 24 hour train ride and it must have been way below 0 in the compartment (there was a bowl of water in the compartment and it was frozen solid all the way through , and it never thawed). That being said, it was back in 1991 maybe things are better now (re: heat). Cold doesn't even bother me (heat does) but I'll never forget how cold I was on that trip.

I would still go though if I were you. Once you get down South near the SE Asian countries the weather will be great.

Did you realize you were talking about China in December instead of a certain Chinese city in December? The temperature in Hainan at that time could reach 29 degrees. ;)

You were talking about a certain city in 1991, actually.:)

It was freezing when I was In Beijing, X'ian (was beautiful with about a foot of fresh snow), a couple other places I don't remember, and especially Louyang!!! Definitely more than 1 city! China is a big place. I'm sure it was unusually cold that year. In Shanghai I think I remember hearing on CNN that it was the coldest in 50 years.

Another time I was in Tibet in Feb. (people told me it would be cold and I was quiet comfortable). I was in Guilin in January and comfortable. In 2001 I was in SW China and the weather was perfect. In Beijing, everything was frozen (the fountains, the lakes, etc..)

Like I mentioned cold doesn't usually bother me, but for about 2 weeks in the Northern half of China (probably a hundred+ cities ) in was COLD! I don't think it matters what year it was (its not like the climate was that different 14 years ago than now or any other year), however, what I would think might be different 14 years later is that maybe now there is heat in some of the places I mentioned.

I understand what you are saying about the weather being different in different parts of China. That's what I meant when I said once she gets in the South of China (by saying near the SE Asian countries I was referring to the Southern parts of China)the weather will be great. Here in the US it can be -30 in Minnisota and +25 in Florida on the same day.

Yes, it`s still cold, but we have heat now.

China is about the same size as the United States. The southern parts are near the Tropic of Cancer, however it can stil get cool in winter

When I was in Vermont last January 2004 it reached -32 some days. My body was never that cold because I was skiing and I had plenty of layers, gators, hats and gloves on. But I'll never forget how cold my toes got, and my eyebrows kept frosting up.

I actually sort of like cold weather as long as I can warm up indoors. Anyway, thanks for all the feedback everyone.

Ps: Travel: Wow! You have been everywhere!!
