Hey

We are 3 students that are going to school in South Dakota this summer. We are planning to travel to California 1 month before school starts, and drive to South Dakota.
Because we are under 25, renting a car is expensive. So we want to buy a car in California, we have an address in Rapid City, SD.

Can I register the car in California?
Or do I need to register it in South Dakota?
Or can I get a temporary registration permit that I can use on the road trip?

Thank you.

Most states give you 30 days to register a vehicle. Not sure about Calif. but will check for you next week. If you buy from a dealer, he will do all the paperwork and you should be able to drive to So. Dakota and register it there. Good luck.

I called Calif DMV and they give you 20 days to register a vehicle. Plates stay with the vehicle in Calif. NV requires new plates for each new owner. You will need to buy insurance, but you could drive to South Dakota using the Calif plates and register it there. SD will take the Calif plates and issue you new ones. Good luck with your trip.

OK. NV does as well. If you come to Las Vegas, I can help buying, insuring, registering your vehicle. Good luck.

Vegasmike6 has helped out so many foreigners looking to buy/rent cars/RVs/Trucks in the US that he probably deserves some kind of award.

Thanks again, Mike.

Gary,
22 TP members have come to Vegas to make their US dream come true. I have met some great folks helping out. A few jerks as well! but it has usually been a very positive experience. Mike
