ps: forgot to add, train travel is the way to see India!! But you need to familiarise yourself with the complicated booking system in advance. You need to book 2-3 months ahead in peak holiday seasons if you want to get a seat in the 2AC or 3AC classes, which most tourists do. It's a bit tricky setting up your account for doing this if you aren't an Indian citizen, so make sure you do this well in advance and get used to the process. It's very straightforward to cancel or change tickets. Also, your seats on the trains don't actually get confirmed usually until close to the date of travel, so it can be a bit confusing the first time. Let me know if you have any questions.

This may be too late as you are in the midst of travelling, but I would recommend in June going to Shimla, where you are immersed in the Himalayas and taking the toy train there. It's quite an experience. It's very cool weather so you should actually bring a sweater with you if you go!

Another incredible experience is heading to Kerala in the deep south (as some of the people have mentioned) and renting a houseboat. While it is monsoon season, I find that the rains cool off the area and it's quite refreshing. Plus you can get a houseboat at a discount.

If you are looking for really authentic Indian food experiences outside of just eating at restaurants, you can have a host cook you food in their own homes. They are in various cities in India, and have really good reviews!

Hope that helps!

I think you must visit Lakshadweep. It’s itinerary for India. And Kadmat Island is best out of these islands. The beaches are very clean and serene and very relaxing to take sun bath there or see sunrise/sunset. Then also you can enjoy various water sports like snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving also for serious water sport lovers.

Hi Steve, 3-4 months are sufficient to cover best of places of India. Although you can't cover the whole India in 3-4 months. According to me you should cover north India first then go to south, So I'll discuss only north India here.
Must visit:-
1- Red fort, Qutub Minar, Humanyu Tomb, Aksar dham temple, Lotus temple, India gate, jantar mantar etc
2- The Taj Mahal - Agra, Uttar Pradesh (there are few more monuments in Agra that you should also visit.)
3- After visiting these two places, its time to see cool India. Uttarakhand - one of my fav. state in India. This is the place of natural beauty, forest and mountains. There are lots of tourist places like Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Nainital, kedarnath, badrinath, yamunotri, gangotri, Auli, Jim Corbet national park for wild life. Besides these there so many natural places in this state which are not such popular but those are also awesome namely Chopta, tungnath, Hemkund sahib etc.
4- Himachal Pradesh is another beautiful state of India. This state is similar to uttarakhand but have its own beauty... must sees are:- Manali, Khajjiar, shimla, spiti, kullu, dalhausi, dharamshala and last but not the least Mcleodganj.
5- Go J&K after HP, visit gulmarg, sonemarg, ladakh, leh. In Jammu n Kashmir my fav. adventure destination is Leh n laddakh. As you mentioned you're adventure loving. This is the best place for adventure in north India but remember, the suitable time is june to mid august.

Besides these 5 places you should visit rajasthan n Gujrat for forts, monuments and India's largest desert. ENJOY n cover as much as India you can :) All the best
