Technically that'd be a logical fit, but I'm pretty doubtful about it being userfriendly enough for this usecase. :/

Increase the user-friendliness then. If there's something already in place that can be used and all it needs is for the usability to be improved, then it would make sense to do that eh?

For adding photos to a group - my plan is to have a link in the Group to "Add photos to group". This link would then show you a list of photos you have uploaded and allow you to add the relevant ones. I think this is the logical place to add photos from a user point of view. This also actually restricts the ability to spam a whole bunch of groups at once.

I think maybe the same system for blog posts, but not as sure about that.

One way I'm planning to recruit group members is also to ask them after they have entered a blog post. If the blog post is entered as being in Australia in 2014 - then it would be a good opportunity to invite that user to join the "People Travelling in Australia in 2014" group.

As a result, the year and country the group is related to will both be optional details to add for new groups.

Sounds like a slow way if a user has quite a few photos, unless choosing a tag for multiple photos is an option. Would there be any ability for the person to sort the photos (e.g. by tag, by date uploaded). The ability to upload a photo and at the same time include it in a group they're a member of would probably be useful.

It wouldn't be dissimilar to how photos are inserted in blog entries. Yes, you could select multiple photos and insert at once and search by tag would be part of it. In 99% of cases though, I imagine the photos will be in their last upload batch anyway, so don't think that's a major issue. Similar to the blogs, I'd include an upload form there too so you can quickly add new photos also.

Well, version 1 of this is up and running. Only tracking forum threads and members of the group for now. Under the community navigation item, there's now a Groups option as well.

Threads that are assigned to a group have a link back to the group in them, see this one

I've created three groups to kick things off and populate the groups page a bit. I'll let them gain a few members before adding more, but feel free to suggest more yourself. You can suggest groups through this page.

Still plenty of gaps (photos, blog posts, ability to add existing threads to group), but the basic functionality should already be a help and I was obviously keen to get it up and running

I just joined my first group, and at the bottom of the right-hand column, see an "Unsubscribe from updates" link. Since I dislike email updates, I click it. And the same page reloads, with that same link still there. Should probably toggle to a "subscribe to updates" text. (Or did it not take at all?) And maybe add a global profile setting "never send me updates from groups" or something similar.

You should probably also add that to the /community/ page, since that mirrors the other three sections, and so I had some trouble finding it before actually looking in the dropdown.

My initial thought on the Groups page (other than it should be added to the community page as Sander has already suggested) is to do with the amount of space taken up by each group in the list. On a big screen, there could easily be 2 groups side by side on each row. Probably the same for a medium screen too.

I also notice one of the groups currently has 38 members - 16 profile pics are shown. How are the 16 chosen, as it doesn't seem to change on a refresh. Perhaps a "random" selection may be an idea so the list of members change on reloads. Maybe also prefer those with a profile pic over those without, as currently there are 4 in that list of 16 without a pic, 3 of those together. It looks a little odd.

Final thing for now, what's the maximum number of groups that can be shown on the "Most Active Groups" list, and how can you look for other groups other than via the thread view in the forums? Might be useful to have a search option or some sort.

Thanks guys, all good points. I'll make some further improvements today based on this.
