Odessa, a port city on the Black Sea is Ukraine's fourth largest city with a population of about 1 million. Built by order of Catherine the Great with the vision of creating a St Petersburg of the south, its architecture owes much to French influence. The old centre of the city is about 215 years old, built to a grid plan.
