Although many in Sri Lanka also observe the Western New Year (Jan 1), the official new year, according to the local lunar calendar, is celebrated April 13-14th. This New Years holiday is celebrated by a variety of religious rituals (all timed specifically to lunar movement), families get together, share food and desserts, and play traditional games.
Tropic Inn is a very nice place to stay in Colombo. It is easy to arrive by public bus from the Central Station but you can also go walking to the Fort (even if it is not very close).
