Kilkenny is the capital of Kilkenny County, located along the River Nore in the southern central parts of Ireland, about halfway between Dublin and Limerick, which are both around 100 kilometres away. It has around 22,000 inhabitants and in 2009 it celebrated the 400th birthday as being a city.

Hi nutsnbolts, Obviously Dublin is great for nice sights, shopping, night life...Gendalough and Powerscourt are also nice scenic places easily done on a day trip from Dublin. There are nice walks in the Wicklow mountains too if that's to your taste. On the way to Shannon...Kilkenny would be a good place ...
