Since you are going by land, I'd suggest stopping off in San Luis Potosi and Quereraro on the way down to Mexico City or Veracruz. Nice towns (both of them) and very scenic for large cities. Once you get to the state of Quintana Roo, I'd suggest seeing many of the pyramids south of Merida ...
