Seatanbul Guesthouse

Seatanbul Guesthouse

Istanbul, Turkey

The room was clean and had good facilities as described. However, it was a basement room with a tiny window, blocked by vending machines on the pavement outside. Breakfast was in a separate property 2 doors down the street (with great sea views from the balcony tables, though).
Service was ok if slow most of the time, but there was one bad incident. I opened a pre-packed butter portion at breakfast and found dirt in it. The waitress went away with it, and came back with the same portion with the dirt scraped off. When I refused it she brought a dish with 'clean' butter in it, obviously from the same packets. I complained to the owner and he showed me a box full of opened, dirt-contaminated packets and explained that the box had come from the factory like this, and he was waiting for them to replace it. He did not seem to have thought of buying an alternative.
Also I must say I felt the owner was attempting to come on sexually to me, and was at the same time being intimidating. I'm a mature, fairly experienced single female traveller, and definitely felt uncomfortable around him. When I arrived he picked up my bag and started to walk off down the street with it without explaining who he was or what he was doing (he was taking it to the property with the rooms, which does not have a name sign). Checking in and paying in his (very small) office became a contest ('Why don't you want the door shut?', trying to kiss my hand 'in the Turkish manner'!)
Overall, sadly, I would not recommend this property.

Kale's Homestay

Kale's Homestay

Antalya, Turkey

I was made very welcome and felt at home. The property is in the centre of the old town, budget price, clean, and convenient, and the owner is very hospitable and friendly.
The only drawback I would mention is that the rooms are in a basement flat, with windows at pavement level. It was a bit disconcerting at first seeing constant 'pavement life' at ankle level, and having cars parking and driving past outside the window. It was also rather noisy at night with windows open - take ear plugs! However the windows have continental style metal grills over them so there is no security issue, and I soon got used to it.
I would also advise taking a clear map with the location marked (no 16, Kurtulus Street, near Alaadin Mosque, in Kaleici) and practice your Turkish pronunciation of the directions. I arrived from the airport at 11 pm and the taxi driver and locals had difficulty finding it. The street names were hard to find in the dark, and the notice 'Kale's Homestay' was in a basement window hidden behind a parked car. However a friendly neighbour helped out once we arrived in the street.
Great if you are looking for budget accommodation and a down-to-earth and warm welcome.
