Introduction

The spa town of Banos is located in the centre of Ecuador at an altitude of 1,851 metres above sea level. The active volcano of Tungurahua overlooks the town. By day there's usually a cloud visible of the mix of CO2 and lava being expelled from the volcano. At night you could be treated to a light show as lava is expelled from the volcano.

There are many travel operators in the town catering to the outdoor and adventure minded traveller. Activities include mountain biking, horse riding, canyoning, kayaking, bungee jumping and volcano tours. Various bus tours, spa treatments and mineral baths are available for the less adventure minded.

Sights and Activities

The active volcano Tungurahua overlooks the town and provides opportunities to see what an active volcano looks like, albeit from a safe distance. The are numerous waterfalls within easy reach of the town. El Virgin waterfal is within the town, a short walk from the centre. Activities available include hiking, bike riding, horse riding, kayaking, canyoning.

The 'banos' or baths that give the town its name are within easy reach. There are also many massage places in town for the weary traveller.

A bus from Riobamba takes just under two hours.

By Foot

The town is easily explored on foot as it's pretty compact.

By Bike

Bike rental for one day is around US$5.00. A recommended trip is to take the road to Puyo. On the route you can enter the first tunnel on the road out of Banos on your bike. The following tunnels aren't recommended for cyclists and have cycle paths around them instead. Numerous waterfalls line the route.
