Bradford Metropolitan Borough was formed in 1974 as a part of West Yorkshire. It comprised the City of Bradford, previously a County Borough, and a number of boroughs and districts that had been part of the historic West Riding of Yorkshire. Larger places such as Shipley, Keighley (pronounced Keithley), Bingley and Ilkley would see themselves as far more than neighbourhoods, although acknowledging that they come under Bradford Metropolitan District Council.
The former City of Bradford and the boroughs had and have neighbourhoods. An interesting neighbourhood of Bradford (city) near to the centre is Little Germany. Saltaire (see below) is a most interesting neighbourhood of Shipley.
