The Old town of Cáceres can be compared with the old city of Toledo, but is less touristic. The ciudad monumental is the old part of Caceres and it is walled. Most of the towns monuments can be found in this part. Only the large Plaza Mayor and the Iglesia de Santiago are outside of this area.

Trujillo

Like Caceres, Trujillo has a beautiful old inner city, only on a smaller scale.

Events and Festivals

WOMAD

The WOMAD (World Of Music And Dance) festival, a festival organised by Peter Gabriel, with a lot of world music comes to Cáceres every year in early May. The festival takes place at the Plaza Major, Plaza San Jorge and the Plaza de las Veletas. Besides the music, there is the possibility to taste a lot of foods from all over the world, and there also in a big market at the paseo de Cánovas, a street not far away from the Plaza Major.

Chiviri

The Chiviri is a festival on which the people of Trujillo celibrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter. The party starts at sunset on Easter Saturday. From midnight an orchestra plays traditional tunes, mostly based on works of the poet Goro (who lived and worked in Trujillo). The crowd many in typical regional dress gathers on the Plaza Major, dances and sings along with the music. When the music stops most people will either hang out on the square, or find a place in the pubs or clubs to continue the celebrations. On Sunday the International Folklore Festival takes place at the Plaza Major.

Feria del Queso de Trujillo

Since 1986 every year on the 1st of May there is a huge Cheese Fair on the Plaza Major of Trujillo. Here you will find producers of cheese from all over Spain selling their cheeses.
