Eisriesenwelt

Introduction

In the mountains above Werfen lies the ice caves of Eisriesenwelt The caves are open for the public between May and early October. From the parkinglot in Gries/Werfen there are busservices going up the mountain that take you to a parking lot near a cablecar that takes you even further up hill, and after that it's a short 15-minute walk to the cave. Drivers who have experience in driving in the mountains, can drive up the mountain for the first piece on themselves. When you visit please remember that these are ice caves, so bring appropriate clothing. During the visit tour that takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, you will be climbing a total of 134 metres.

Opening Hours

The caves are opened from early May untill late October (in 2010 until 26. October)

Guided tours take place between 9.00 a.m. till 15:30 p.m. (in July and August until 16.30)

Getting There

By Train

From Salzburg you can take the train to Werfen. Check the timetable at ÖBB.at, the trip takes 54 minutes. From the station there are busses leaving to the visitorcentre at 8.20, 10.20, 12.20, 14.20, and by prior arrangement. call 0043/(0)6468/5293 or mail: eisriesenwelt.linie@aon.at. You can also take the 5 minute walk to the parking lot at Gries, where busses leave more frequently. (see below)

By Car

Werfen lies just south of Salzburg, from there you can take the Tauern motorway (A10) south. From Markt Werfen, you need to drive up hill (max. incline 21%) through the mountains to the Eisriesenwelt car park at the visitor centre. If you are unfamiliar with driving in the mountains it is recommened to leave your car at the carpark in Werfen, and take the bus to the cable car.

By Bus

There is a local bus service leaving from Gries, every 25 minutes during the day, that will take you to the visitor centre. call 0043/(0)6468/5293 or mail: eisriesenwelt.linie@aon.at.

Eat & Drink

Near to the entrance of the cave lies the Dr. Oedlhaus a restaurant, which a great panoramic view towards the valley of the Salzach. If you want to eat with big group it is advisable to make a reservation ++43/(0)6468/5248/12
