Travel Guide Europe United Kingdom England East England Cambridge Fitzwilliam Museum
The Fitzwilliam Museum is the art and antiquities museum of the University of Cambridge. Located on the edge of the city centre of Cambridge, the Fitzwilliam Museum is housed in an imposing pillared building.
It is refreshing to be in a museum where there is plenty of light. So many can be dulled by dark corners. The Fitzwilliam thirty or so galleries are, for the most part, fresh and clean.
The museum has five departments: Antiquities; Applied Arts; Coins and Medals; Manuscripts and Printed Books; and Paintings, Drawings and Prints. Most of the galleries have permanent displays, but several have ever changing exhibitions.
Don’t miss the main picture gallery at the top of the staircase by the main entrance. The narrow and high balcony means a climb up a steep spiral staircase, which is well hidden. Clue: look behind the pillars!
The well stocked shop and quality cafe make this a place to visit in Cambridge and the short walk from the centre is worthwhile.
