Travel Guide Europe Norway Flåm Flåm Railway
The Flåmsbana is a privately owned line. It descends in just over 30 kilometres from above the snow line (even in summer) to a very few feet above sea level. Each coach is equipped with 5 braking systems, each of which can stop the whole train. Kjosfossen is a halt towards the top wher something like a ship's gangplank is lowered from each coach and passengers file out to look at the huge waterfall. You have just been told through the train's loudspeaker about a siren who looms people (men anyway) to their doom with sweet singing. As you leave the train, you hear sweet singing and (lo and behold) there is the siren - but how does she make it sound as though the music comes from behind you - where the train is waiting?
