Introduction

Gagaúzia, formally known as the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri), is an autonomous region of Moldova. Its name comes from the Gagauz people.

Geography

Gagauzia is divided into three districts. It also is split into four enclaves. The main, central enclave includes the cities Comrat and Ceadîr-Lunga and is divided into two districts with those cities serving as administrative centers. The second largest enclave is located around the city of Vulcănești, while two smaller enclaves are the villages of Copceac and Carbalia. The village of Carbalia falls under administration of Vulcănești, while Copceac is part of the Ceadir-Lunga district.

Sights and Activities

  • Cathedral of Saint John, built in 1820 located in the center of Komrat.
  • Museum of local history located in Komrat, Lenin Street. Museum of local history, handicrafts, gagauazian autonomy movement and local artists. All information in Russian/ Gagauz. In front of the museum is the new memoral of victims of Repression, unveiled in 2013.
  • Museum of Gagauz culture located in the suburb of Beşalma. Well done museum of Gagauz culture including a documentary on Gagauz wedding ceremonies.
  • Alley of Gagauzian Glory leading to the university of comrat.
  • Monument of Vladimir Lenin monument placed on a popular spot - in front of the gagauzian parlament! flowers are laid down here at special occassions.

Getting There

By Bus

Comrat is 99 kilometres south from Chisinau. Take a marshrutka from Gara de Sud, every hour till 6:00pm, takes about 2-3 hours.

Drink

Gagauzia has very good and cheap wines. Most people make their own wine (white, red, rose, sparkling wine). If you can't buy one of these, you can also buy them f.e. Vino Komrata in the center of Comrat (Lenin Street), best bring you own plastic bottles. From 12 leu/liter
