Travel Guide Asia Thailand North Thailand Chiang Rai Province Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Chiang Rai. Located in Sop Ruak village, it was once an infamous opium trading point and is where the Mekhong River converges to form the meeting point of 3 countries; Thailand, Laos, Myanmar.
Here you can also visit the Opium Museum which gives an educational insight into the history of opium trading in the area.
You can also take a longtail speedboat across the Mekhong over to Laos to visit a local market.
The Golden Triangle itself can be seen 24 hours, the Opium Museum closes around 5:00pm as when most of the local markets selling souvenirs in the area do,
Public buses run to Chiang Rai, Chiang Saen and Mae Sai. Song tiaw (local pick up trucks) can be hailed in the street to get to short distances or motorbike taxis. Motorbike taxis can be recognised by the drivers who wear bright orange vests.
