Travel Guide Oceania Australia New South Wales Hunter Region
The Hunter Region, or Hunter Valley, is a region in New South Wales well known for its wine-growing areas. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia, attracting 2.5 million people each year. The largest industry in the area is coal, mostly exported out via the port at Newcastle. About 600,000 people in live in the Hunter, mostly in the coastal cities of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
The Hunter Region is located along the coast of New South Wales, about 120 kilometres north of Sydney. The Hunter River runs through the region.
The climate is comparable to that of Sydney, albeit a bit warmer in general. Summers from November to March are generally warm and sunny while winters from June to August are mild but see occasional rainshowers. Temperatures can reach up to 40 °C in summer, but most of the times it's much cooler fortunately. During winter, temperatures are mostly between 15 and 20 °C during the day, though occasionally much higher as well. Nights are pleasant in summer, rather cool during winter.
There are plenty of companies you could choose to hire a car from, including Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty. Car hire is often not available to drivers under 25, or if it is, it's more expensive for younger drivers.
