Hutiaoxia Town (虎跳峡镇 Hǔtiào Xiá Zhèn), formerly known as Qiaotou (literally "Bridgehead"), is a fairly uninteresting place in itself. However, it is best known as the start-point for the Tiger Leaping Gorge trek. If you're stuck for a few hours, the town has a reasonable street market.
The road to Lijiang is fast and modern, less so to Shangri-La, and the road along the gorge to Walnut Garden (and on to Daju) is currently awful.
Frequent public buses to Lijiang, Shangri-La, and along the gorge road to Walnut Garden.
There aren't many options in Qiaotou. There are some traditional Chinese eateries and scruffy guesthouses in the centre of town, but most travellers congregate at Margo's 'Gorged Tiger Cafe', by the start of the gorge road. Margo herself is a mine of information on the gorge.
