Travel Guide > Europe > Slovakia > Košice
Košice is Slovakia's second largest city. It is situated on the banks of the Hornád river in eastern Slovakia near Hungary. The city's historical center is well preserved and includes Slovakia's largest Gothic cathedral. Košice was the first European settlement to have its own coat-of-arms.
Kosice has a moderate continental climate with warm summers and relatively cold winters.
Summers last from June to September with average maximum temperatures mostly between 22 °C and 26 °C in the lower parts of the country. Nights average around a pleasant 13 °C during this time.
Winters, from December to March are usually around or a little above 0 °C during the day and a little below zero at night, though cold spells of weather when the wind blows from the east are possible.
The east (where Kosice is located) is colder than the southwest of the country during this time. Absolute highs and lows are 39 °C and -27 °C. Precipitation is quite evenly distributed throughout the year, although spring and summer are somewhat wetter. On average, there are between 10 and 15 days with some rain (or snow).
