L'Áquila Province is the largest in Abruzzo and the only Abruzzo province to lack a coast on the Adriatic.
However it compensates for this with magnificent mountain scenery. Its cities and other locations suffered massively from an eathquake in April 2009.

Geography

L'Áquila province contains all or part of Abruzzo's national and regional parks. The national parks are:

• Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise
• Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga
• Parco Nazionale della Majella
• Parco del Sirente - Velino is the regional park.

• Pescaserolli - chief habitation in Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise.

Sights and Activities

With all those parks there is no shortage of sights and it is a matter of picking a few favourites:

• Gran Sasso - highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. if you want to go up, you can get a good start from using the funicular (Local bus from L'Áquila).
• Bominaco churches
• Santo Stefano di Sesanio medieval housing.
• Val Fondillo - near Opi for a beautiful walk.
• Lake near Scanno
• Rocca di Calascio
