Lumbinī is located in the Rupandehi, close to the border with India. It is here where Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who is better known a the Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Lumbini is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Neighbourhoods

There are actually no neighbourhoods in Lumbini, as it is no more than a collection of buildings, all within a rectangular area, which measures approximately 4,5 by 1,5 kilometres.

The sights in Lumbini, include several temples, monasteries, the world peace pagoda, the pillar marking Asoka's visit to Lumbiní, the Holy pont, in which Buddha's mother bathed before giving birth, and in which he also took his first bath. Some scientists have also located the exact location where Gautama Buddha was born.

Getting There

By Plane

The closest airport is Gautam Buddha Airport near Bhairahawa, with connections to and from Kathmandu

By Bus

Lumbini is a 10-hour drive from Kathmandu and a 45-minute drive from Bhairahawa.

Internet

The use of email is growing, although its availability is most widespread in Kathmandu and Pokhara, where is is also cheap. Outside the main tourist areas, internet is not widely available and where it is, it does cost a lot more.

There are two main mobile operators in Nepal. Government run NTC (Nepal Telecom Company), and private Ncell (previously called Spice Mobile and Mero Mobile). Both operators allow tourists to buy SIM cards for about 200NRs in Kathmandu and most major towns.

Post

Nepal Post is the Postal Service Department of the Nepali Ministry of Information and Communications and the national post office of Nepal. Services are terribly slow, especially to international destinations. Post offices are generally open Sunday to Thursday from 10:00am to 5:00pm, and on Friday until 3:00pm, although some offices keep longer hours. For packages, it is recommend to use international courier services like DHL, TNT or UPS.
