The Maluku Islands, also called Moluccas, Moluccan Islands or Spice Islands, are one of the seven main geographical units in Indonesia and located between the geograhical regions of West Papua and Sulawesi. The islands have a total population of around 2 million.
The Maluku Islands are 90% sea with 77,990 km² of land, and 776,500 km² of sea. It contains two provinces: the Maluku province, with Ambon Island as the main island, and North Maluku province, with Ternate as the main island.
Babullah Airport (TTE) on Ternate and Pattimura Airport (AMQ) on Ambon Island are the biggest airports, the latter having by far the most connections, though Ternate has direct flights to Jakarta, Manado and Makassar as well. Ambon offers these flights (except Manado), plus flights to Surabaya and quite a few smaller regional cities, like Sorong.
