Sights and Activities

Mkhaya Game Reserve

Mkhaya Game Reserve offers the best opportunity in Africa to see black rhinos in the wild. The reserve also contains white rhino, elephant, leopard, hippo, zebra, giraffe and various antelopes, though not in anywhere near the quantities visible in East Africa. The guides, though, are excellent. The cost of a day safari to the reserve is E475 (Sep 2009) - you have to book in advance either by phone or at the Big Game Parks office in The Gables shopping centre in Ezulwini. They prefer credit card bookings (to prevent no-shows) but, if you sound/look sincere, they'll let you pay cash (you pay at the park). You have to be at the pick-up point in Phuzamoya by 10:00am and you'll be dropped off again there at about 4:00pm. The day includes a morning game drive, a buffet lunch, and an afternoon game drive - you get a 500 ml bottle of water for free. The vehicle is entirely open so you'll need a hat, sunscreen, etc. They need a minimum of 2 people to run the tour, but as long as another group has already booked then you can tag along with them. Kombis from Manzini to Phuzamoya (which is on the road to Big Bend) leave fairly frequently, taking 50 minutes and costing E20 (Sep 2009). Most visitors to the park have their own transport, so you may be able to cadge a lift back to Manzini at the end of the safari. Failing that, kombis to Manzini pass through Phuzamoya up until nightfall, and hitching is also possible (with the usual caveats).

Getting There

By Bus

Minibuses leave from Maputo in Mozambique from 7:00-9:00am from Ave Albert Luthuli (near the Ave de 25 Setembre end). It takes about 3.15 hours to reach Manzini (border formalities at Goba included), costing M350 (Sep 2009). You may also be given the option to pay (a lower price) in rand, but note that it's very hard to get rid of meticais outside of Mozambique so it's a good idea to use them up.
There are regular minibuses (called kombis) between Manzini and Mbabane costing E15 (Sep 2009) and taking about 30 minutes. Most pass through Ezulwini, costing E12 (Sep 2009) and taking about 20 minutes.
