Mariposa might be a nice town, located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, but it's main draw is located a short drive from town: Yosemite National Park.
Still, this small town with about 1,600 inhabitants has good hotels, motels and restaurants for a better price compared to places neares Yosemite park.
Mariposa-Yosemite Airport is about 6 kilometres west from Mariposa, but there are no scheduled flights (2010).
If you are visiting Yosemite National Park, the shortest route is to take US 140 towards El Portal. A little further, about 45 minutes to one hour from Mariposa is the main southern entrance of the park. If you want to visit the Wawona section of the park (with Giant Sequoia Groves), it is best to take US 49 towards Oakhurst and go north from there. The airport is just a short drive west from town along US 49. US 140 travelling west brings you to Merced, the Central Valley and US 99, from where you can continue south towards Fresno.
