Mayo is a county within the province of Connacht. It encompasses the Doo Lough Lake and mountains area, along the famine road, Louisburgh to Leenane.
Mayo is a rather hilly region, like much of the country.
There is beautiful scenery, hill walking and swimming. Get there at the end of July and watch all the farmers round up their hundreds of sheep off the mountains and walk them back to their farms. However, do not stand in the way; they are moving and keep a distance as not to scare the sheep back up the mountain (it will drive the locals crazy as its hard work sorting them out again!), so keep a distance in the bog.
You can get to Mayo by bike, car or just fly in.
Known as the famine road for the extremely high number of victims of the famine in the 1840's.
