Located about 100kms from Melbourne, Meredith is probably best know for the annual Meredith Music Festival. However, with a population of approximately 1000, Meredith is not commonly on the backpacker trail.
Held in early December, Meredith Music Festival is held at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre over 3 days. The first festival was in 1991 and attracted only 250 punters; but by 2007, more than 10,000 people were heading to Meredith.
Meredith Music Festival has been hailed as Australia's answer to Woodstock, but is best summed up by the Festival Organisers

Accessible via Victoria's country rails system V-Line, the train trip to Meredith takes approximately 2 hours from Melbourne. Travellers will need to change trains in Geelong.
Meredith is halfway between Geelong and Ballarat on the Midland Highway (A300), about 90kms due West of Melbourne. From Melbourne CBD it'll take you about 2 hours to drive there by car.
Meredith has a very small airport for charter and private aeroplanes. Commercial flights land at Melbourne's Tullamarine or Avalon airport.
