Travel Guide Europe Italy Latium Ostia Antica
Ostia Antica is a fantasic ancient place and it is worth paying for a guide if you can manage to get here. This was the port of ancient Rome, the River Tiber having changed its route somewhat since and was very much a working town, unlike the far more upper class Pompeii. The hotel was one for working sailors rather than wealthy Romans, who would have had little reason to stay.
Hadrian, he of the wall in England and the villa in Tivoli, was responsible for much in the 'public' areas and his deep concern with public health and general fitness is clear.
Outside the ruins, the town has an old fort with two eating places in its area.
