Travel Guide Europe France Normandie Ouistreham
Ouistreham is a seaside town on the Normandy coastline of northwestern France. It is the famous location of Sword beach, one of the 5 D-Day landings. On June 6th 1944, 177 No4 commandos from the French battalion landed here and fought their way to Pegasus bridge, neutralised the German watchtower and liberated the town. There are a number of museums dedicated to the commandos.
Ouistreham has been a small fishing port since the middle ages and has widely opened up to tourism over the last twenty five years due to the construction of the Brittany Ferry Port. Due to this, the town has sprouted numerous bars, cafes and restaurants and a diverse range of shops.
The old village is home to the 19th century church which has become an icon for the town. There are plenty of activities available such as mini-golf, sailing, fishing, horse riding, karting, tennis, cycling, spa, casino, water sports and cruises.

La Poste in France is also referred to as the PTT (short for postes, télégraphes et téléphones). The mailboxes are painted bright yellow and often there is a slot for local city mail and another slot for "outside mail". Normally there is a queue in the post office, but most of the post offices have the self service machine installed which is quite easy to operate. Nowadays many of the tabac and even some of the souvenir shops also sell postage stamps. Normally an overseas postcard costs almost as much as sending a letter.
Post offices are generally open from 8:00am to 7:00pm Monday through Friday, and 8:00am to noon on Saturdays. Apart from the basic job of mailing letters, most of the post offices do some banking activities also and some even have photocopy machines and cyber cafes for internet access.
