Travel Guide > Caribbean > Saint Lucia > Pitons Management Area
The Pitons Management Area is located just south of the small city of Soufriere in the southwest of Saint Lucia. It is named after the two peaks towering above the Caribbean Sea and Soufriere and providing one of the best known landmarks on all of the Caribbean islands. Part of the UNESCO site however is located beneath the water surface and a combination of green lush vegetation, towering peaks and excellent snorkelling and diving makes this place one of the most beautiful and popular on the island.
There are numerous organisation in and near Soufriere that offer activities in the Pitons Management Area. They range from snorkelling and diving tours to see the coral reefs and colourful fish species, to full day hikes up the Gros Piton (770 meters) and Petit Piton (743 meters). The latter one is a steeper climb, but the climb to Gros Piton takes much longer and is more of a strenuous hike. It's best to hire a guide.
The area is just south of Soufriere and can be reached easily by (rental) car. Otherwise, take a taxi, which is better if you are not planning on doing much driving and is relatively cheap when you are with more people.
Soufriere itself has several good restaurants, local ones and some takeaways. Most are located near the central square and church or near the waterfront.
Most hotels and resorts are located outside Soufriere, catering to people wanting luxury and nearby beaches. Still, in town there are some more basic appartments available. Just shop around.
