Salaspils is a town in Latvia situated on the river Daugava. It is considered to have great historical importance, with some of the earliest reported remains of early man in Latvia. It is also the site of a great battle that took place between the Swedes and The Polish Lithuanian alliance army back in 1605 and during the Second World War the Nazi's established Stalag-350-s, a concentration camp for Jews and Soviet prisoners of war. Today the number of people who perished in Stalag-350-s is under debate. A large hydro electric station was built here, known as Riga HES and the area was developed heavily in the 1950s and 1960s with many block houses being constructed.
