At Salinas there are thousands of salt pans currently being used to extract salt in this area and this has been done here since Inca days. Hot salt-laden spring water is discharged, diverted and channelled into separate pans, evaporated, collected and sold.
There's a spectacular trail from the Salinas salt pans down the valley to Urubamba crossing the Rio Urubamba.
