Sandoy is one of the smaller islands in the Faroe Islands, connected by car ferry with Streymoy in the north and the still smaller island of Skuvoy in the south.

Geography

Sandoy is flatter and more agricultural than most of the Faroe Islands but it has a coastline as beautiful as any. From the south there are great views of the barely inhabited islands of Stora Dimun and Litla Dimun, with Suðuroy in the background.
From the Streymoy ferry Hestur and shapely Koltur can be seen clearly with Vágar.

Sights and Activities

  • Soltuvik - Uninhabited bay reached from just outside Sandur by an unclassified but beautiful road past a lake and puffin cliffs. At the rocks beyond the bay from the car park at the end of the road, wear something on your head. terns may not be the biggest of birds but they are extremely aggressive when you go near their eggs!
  • Summer only - boat trips from Sandur around the south coast of Sandoy or around Skuvoy.

Weather

Sandoy isn't the first place that comes to mind for its nice weather. Actually, you should consider yourself very lucky if you don't have any rain, even if you just visit for a few days. Even the somewhat drier months of June to August still have 20 to 22 rainy days a month! From October to March it rains on all but a few days a month. Temperatures are never hot but it rarely gets really cold as well. Winter (December to March) night time temperatures average around 2 degrees Celcius while average summer (July-August) temperatures hoover around a chilly 12 degrees.
