Travel Guide Europe United Kingdom England South West England Somerset
Somerset is located in South West England with boundaries to Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire. Somerset is the 7th largest county by area in England. A peculiarity with local government is that Bath and North-east Somerset is a unitary authority providing all local government services, and thus separate from Somerset County Council.
Over half the National Park of Exmoor lies in Somerset and also hilly regions in the Mendips and the Quantocks. To the east side of the county there is much very flat land. Like Devon there are considerable areas given over to cider apples.
Towns and villages in Exmoor will be found on that page.
The Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts, a world class event and probably England's biggest, takes place in June.
The main routes to and through Somerset are the M5 motorway, and the A303, A37, A38 and the A39.
