Thai is the official language of Thailand. The language is also spoken in parts of neighbouring countries: northern Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and some parts of Myanmar. Thai is influenced by the Mon, Sanskrit and Khmer words. The first thai alphabet was created in 1283 by King Ramkamhaeng The Great. Thai is a tonal language. It is quite similar to the Lao language. The standard Thai is spoken in Central Thailand and throughout the country. In other parts of Thailand, there are few Thai dialects (Northern Thailand - Northern Thai Dialect, Southern Thailand - Southern Thai Dialect, Northeastern Thailand - Iisan Language). All Thai dialects are members of the Thai half of the Thai-Kadai family of languages.
