Introduction

The sandy flat area stretching along the coast of the Red Sea in Yemen is called Tihama. Hodeidah is Yemen's fourth largest city and a good starting point for excursions.

Tihama is a historian's delight. Zabid is one of Yemen's oldest towns, boasting a university that is as old as the eight century. The once great port of Mocha, best known for its popular strand of coffee, is also located on the Red Sea in Tihama.

The bustling life in the region of Tihama today is strikingly colourful, more so than the rest of Yemen.
