Travel Guide North America USA Western United States Arizona Tombstone
Tombstone is a town in the southwest of Arizona and the sight of the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral, between Wyatt Earp and his brothers and Doc Holiday and a gang made up of the Clanton and McLaury brothers. The fight itself lasted only 30 seconds, but grew into a legendary fight on the silver screen, mainly due to the film from 1957, which starred Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holiday. The town of Tombstone has about 1,500 inhabitants and makes for a great adventurous day to visit.
The site of the O.K. Corral at Fremont Street now houses a museum and also stages a daily reenactment of the fight that took place on Wednesday October 26, 1881 at 3:00pm.
Also featured in the film was the Boot Hill Graveyard, which lies to the Northwest of the town. Tom McLaury, Frank McLaury, and Billy Clanton who were killed during the fight, are burried here. After 1883, when a new cementary was built no new burials took place at Boot Hill, and it fell in disrepair but was restored in the 1940's.
Allen Street was one of the most notorious streets in the Wild West, and still stands more or less how it stood 140 years ago.
The Tombstone Western Music Festival takes place at the beginning November.
The nearest airport is in Tucson, which has domestic flights to most of the big cities in the USA. Further away, Phoenix offers more domestic and some international flights.

Tombstone is located along highway 80 between, about halfway between Bisbee, another Wild West highlight, and Benson which is located on Interstate 10, the main road through southern Arizona. Benson is about 40 minutes away and from there it's another hour or so to Tucson.

Tombstone is small and unless you are staying on the outskirts of town, everything is accessible on foot.
