Travel Guide > Europe > Faroe Islands > Vágar
Vágar is the most visited of the Faroe Islands, other than Streymoy, because it is where the airport for the islands, also called Vagar, is situated. It should not be confused with Vagur, which is a town on the island of Suðuroy.
Vagar is connected with Streymoy by undersea tunnel - see Faroe Islands - and with the island of Mykines, steep but excellent for bird watching, by passenger ferry.
Vágar isn't the first place that comes to mind for its nice weather. Actually, you should consider yourself very lucky if you don't have any rain, even if you just visit for a few days. Even the somewhat drier months of June to August still have 20 to 22 rainy days a month! From October to March it rains on all but a few days a month. Temperatures are never hot but it rarely gets really cold as well. Winter (December to March) night time temperatures average around 2 degrees Celsius while average summer (July-August) temperatures hoover around a chilly 12 degrees.
Vágar Airport is used by the Faroes' own airline, Atlantic Airways. It has connections to major European cities, such as Aberdeen, Aalborg London-Stansted, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger, Reykjavik and Narsarsuaq in Greenland. Air Iceland flies to Reykjavik as well.
Undersea tunnel from Streymoy is the only car access. There is a toll when leaving Vágar through the tunnel. Payment can be made at any petrol station up to three days after the the date of travel.
No buses from outside the Faroe Islands. Regular connection between the airport and Torshavn.
