Introduction
Vavuniya district is considered the gateway to the Northern province of Sri Lanka and currently the Medawachiya checkpoint is the literal gateway for any movement into and out of the province by the land routes. Travellers who do not reside there or who are not going there for work are currently not allowed into the district.
Neighbourhoods
The district is divided into 4 divisional secretariat divisions: Vavuniya, Vavuniya North, Vavuniya South and Vengalacheddikulam. It has a multi-ethnic population and is currently a sensitive spot due to the numerous welfare camps for the tens of thousands of displaced people.
Eat
Nelli Star is the best place to have a meal in the district. There are a few eateries in town which includes a small cafe, opened by a former Hard Rock Cafe employee, and is located close to Nelli Star.
Sleep
Budget
Nelli Star is the best accommodation available in the district and offers air-conditioned rooms with TV and hot water for around 20 dollars a night. The service is very fast at the restaurant.
