The Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates the campaign, siege, and defense of Vicksburg, Mississippi during the American Civil War. A 16-mile road winds through loess bluffs, with over 1,340 monuments documenting events during the campaign. The USS Cairo, a restored Union ironclad raised from the Yazoo River, is on display. Also located in the park is the Vicksburg National Cemetery, where over 17,000 Civil War soldiers are buried.
Recent and ongoing renovations in 2009-2010 include a newly designed theater entrance and a new orientation film (last updated in the 1970's). Interior restoration at the Shirley House is scheduled to be completed this year, and the public will be allowed inside. [1]
A 16-mile paved road with tour stops, wayside markers, and exhibits. Tour options include a self-guided map tour, cell phone driving tour, audio tour compact discs, a GPS Ranger tour or licensed park tour guides.
Notice: The 3-mile South Loop will be closed from January 4, 2010 until an undetermined date due to renovations. Check the National Park Service website for the re-opening date.
Open every day except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Days. Times vary during the year, with the Visitor Center and Cairo Exhibit open for shorter hours than the actual park. Check the National Park Service website for current times.
