Travel Guide Europe Italy Latium Villa Adriana
Adrian is better known in English speaking countries with an H in front - the very same Hadrian after whom the wall that spanned northern England is called. Abandon any thoughts you may have of a villa as a single house - Villa Adriana is more like a town with an area much the same as Pompeii. Headsets are hired for three hours and you may well find yourself in a rush to return it in time. Between the turnstile and the remains proper is a building with a scale model of the whole site. Examine it carefully as there is nowhere inside where you can get a view of everything.
The actual Imperial Quarters, what in normal parlance more corresponds to the term 'vila' are peobably least interesting, since they have been the most pillaged. The three sets of baths, the old libraries ad Hadrian's private quaters in a 'small' house on a natural island in a lake serving as a moat are among the more interesting quarters.
Don't let anybody con you into walking from the villa into the town of Tivoli. The local bus is a far better bet.
Opens at 0900 and closes at different times in different months from 1530 to 1800.
By Metro: Linea B from central Rome to Rebibbia, then bus to Tivoli. The stop for the villa is wel before the town - ask!
