Vorarlberg is a state in Austria, and as the name suggests it is the region that lies before the Arlberg. It is one of the smaller states in Austria, and much of the land exists of mountains. In the northern part of the state you will find a range of lower mountains that is known as the Bregenzerwald. Further to the south lies the main ridge of the alps. The group that dominates the area is the Silvrettagruppe, with peaks reaching more than 3,000 metres.

Geography

Vorarlberg shares international borders with Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. In the west is also borders Lake Konstanz, which in Europe is more often refured to as the Bodensee. To the east lies the state of Tyrol. The seperation between both states is the Arlberg

A really nice and varied landscape in Vorarlberg is the little Walser valley, which is a 'practical enclave' (that means whilst being a part of Austria, it's only accessible via Germany).

Sights and Activities

Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse

The Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse is a passage through the mountains from the state of Vorarlberg into Tyrol. The road starts near Partenen and goes uphill with 30 hairpin bends to 2,000 metres above sea level. On the top you will find the Silvretta Lake at the Bielerhöhe. Here you have great views towards the Piz Buin. You can use this place as a starting points for a number of hikes. If you follow the Hochalpenstrasse it will take you down again to the town of Galtür. The scenic views make it worth to drive this road, which in most cases is a detour. Note that even in summer weatherconditions can be so bad, that the road is closed due to snow.

By Plane

The state itself doesn't have an airport, but the Bodensee Airport Friedrichshafen is not that far away. It lies on the German side of Lake Constance (Bodensee).

Sleep

If you consider visiting and staying in the little Walser valley, there are plenty of great hotels, but one of the most recommended ones is the Hotel Alte Krone in a town called Mittelberg. It's a traditional, affordable and really personal hotel. Tthe owners, Max and Margit Kaufmann, are personally taking care of their guests!
