Wellington International Airport (IATA: WLG, ICAO: NZWN) is close to the capital city and surrounded on two sides by local houses.
The airport deals with domestic flights to destinations on both the North Island and South Island, together with international flights to and from Australia.
Passengers leaving on an international flight will pay a $25 departure tax. The fee should be paid in the first floor departure area, before proceeding to the international gates.
Security for domestic passengers is at the individual departure gate. There are no facilities beyond the domestic security at each gate. For international passengers, there is a single security area prior to the individual gates.
The orange Airport Flyer Bus runs from outside the terminal into the city centre and to Hutt Valley. The service runs every 20 minutes and the journey to the centre of Wellington takes around 20 minutes. A one-way ticket costs $7.00.
Numerous shuttles run from outside the terminal and will take the traveller to almost any location in Wellington. These shared shuttles cost from $17.00 depending on distance and the number of people who share the ride.
Several car hire desks are located on the ground floor, including those from Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty.
Journies to and from the city centre by car take around 20 minutes. Car parking is inside the airport and across the road from the terminal.
Taxis to and from the centre of the city will cost around $30-35 each way.
The railway station is connected to the airport by the Airport Flyer bus.
With a single terminal, the distance between domestic and international services is a short walk.

The single terminal provides both international and domestic flights. International flight destinations include Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney.
The check-in desks are located on the ground floor. The departure lounge for both domestic and international flights is on the first floor.
There are around a dozen shops on the first floor of the terminal. These provide a range of clothing, gifts, books and newspapers. There is a well stocked duty free shop in the departure lounge.
Located on the first floor are several coffee shops and a bar. Light snacks are available and seating overlooks the runway.
There is a small bar on the first floor in the main departure area, together with several coffee shops.
Several Internet terminals can be found by the main coffee shop on the first floor. The cost to use the terminals is $4.00 per hour. There are also wi-fi services available.
