On June 11th I was in Agra to see the Taj Mahal- the most famous landmark in all of India. As usual I spent some time (and too much money) in an internet café nearby. I was at the cafe till about 1:30 in the morning when they finally kicked me out. It was only a short two blocks to the hostel so I figured it would be OK to walk in the very deserted streets. In Fiji I spent 3 days on the main island of Viti Levu and four days in a tiny Fijian village on the island of Matacawalevu. On the main island over half the population is of Indian origin therefore the island is full of hindu temples and curry shops. I spent my time there soaking up the Indian culture -having a hard time remembering that I was in the South Pacific. I also got to hike in the rainforest in a park near the capital, Suva.
Then I headed out to a homestay on Matacawalevu Island where the movie "the Blue Lagoon" was filmed in 1979. The village was tiny with only about 120 people, no cars, one methodist church and lots of beaches. The vilalge was a traditional indigenous fijian village and completely free of any Indian influence, it was like being in another country from the main island. Life was very slow and relaxed with people napping most afternoons away in the heat and little activity.
