Ramblings...

Posted by Peace 2008 | 8th July 2008

Today was a partial workday as we took a tour of the flooded areas of New Orleans this afternoon.

Elaine: My impressions of the devastation that I shared with you from our January visit, is that there has been slow improvement. Some areas have really come back, but today we toured the levees on the river, Lake Pontchatrain, and the hundreds of miles of canals that pump the water underneath the city. We saw where many of the levees were breached. I was particularly touched by one FEMA trailer on an almost abandoned block and a monument to a grandfather and granddaughter that died in the flooding. There were pictures and a marble marker on the lot. It gives you a lot to think about.

Chris: I marvel at the vast areas affected, to see abandoned house after house, block after block, the markings on the houses notating the date the home was searched, the number of persons perished, animals lost or found abandoned. As well as the number of people still living in FEMA trailers
